Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS) are tradable certificates that represent the environmental and renewable attributes associated with one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable sources. RECs provide a way to track and verify the production and use of renewable energy and allow buyers to commit to using renewable energy without having to build their own renewable energy source.
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are utilized to offset Scope 2 emissions, specifically those related to energy consumption. Companies and organizations use RECs to demonstrate and communicate their commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. As renewable energy projects are connected to the grid, RECs verify that the end user sourced green energy directly from renewable plants rather than from general grid power, which may have a high carbon footprint—all without requiring a direct physical connection to the energy source.
RECs are issued when renewable energy is generated and injected into the power grid. Generators of renewable energy will be issued with a time-stamped renewable energy certificate that they can sell to a buyer. This symbolises that the buyer used the renewable energy that was produced during that specific period. RECs can only be used where there is a transmission link to renewable energy sources (e.g. national or domestic grid) meaning they must be produced and retired in the same geographical region. Use the Green Asset Exchange to get your verified RECs and support the drive to renewable energy.
